The olive tree was first planted by the goddess Athena at the sacred cliff of Acropolis, and Irene, daughter of Zeus and Thetis, the personification of peace, was always depicted with an olive branch in hand.
As a symbol of victory and peace, the olive branch was the winner’s prize at the Olympic Games in ancient Olympia.
